SENTINEL

1st appearance:

Tales from Thunder City #2

(July 2009)

William Graves was a graphic artist living in Thunder City when he found himself appointed the guardian of his native earth dimension by the Omniversal Protectorate, an inter-dimensional peacekeeping force. He has been tasked with maintaining the status quo by seeing to it that no dimensional disturbances occur in his native dimension (designated reality-174) and to prevent unauthorized inter-dimensional travel by persons between realities. There are millions of alternate realities and most have a “Sentinel” stationed in them.

Graves views himself as something of an inter-dimensional “beat cop”, but that title doesn’t do justice to the extent of his powers. The Omniversal Protectorate have granted him (along with all his fellow Sentinels) the ability to fly at supersonic speed (including the ability to reach warp speeds in the vacuum of space, the ability to emit powerful concussive energy blasts of light, heat and some forms of radiation, and the ability to create objects composed of an unknown form of energy.

Sentinel can also create a skintight force field around himself that functions as life support while in the vacuum of space or underwater. While the exact limits of Sentinel’s powers are undefined, it is known that the amount of power he can generate is dependent upon the intensity of his confidence.

Sentinel was the second superhero to make his public debut in Thunder City. He quickly established his reputation by working alongside the police and Thunder City’s first superhero, Titan. Unknown to the general public, Sentinel also has on occasion fulfilled duties as an officer of the Omniversal Protectorate. He currently holds the rank of Captain (designated by the color red on his uniform), although it has been insinuated that he would most likely be a Lieutenant Colonel by now if not for a confrontation he had with a fellow Sentinel (Ernst Hisler) from reality-1649. The two of them have been known for having bad blood between them ever since.

When he was brought up on charges before the Omniversal Protectorate for the confrontation, he was defended by Sentinel from reality-525 (Kate, last name unrevealed), who successfully got the charges dismissed. The two have been friends and frequent partners ever since.

Back in Thunder City, Sentinel was also the first superhero to make contact with the nighttime vigilante known as the Crimson Archer. Rather than coming to blows, Sentinel gave him a “business card” and told the Archer to call him if he should ever need assistance. Little did Sentinel know that he would be hearing from the Crimson Archer much sooner than either of them would have thought!
